Polysomnography Hospital
A sleep study or polysomnogram is a diagnostic test that provides a detailed look at what happens in your body when you’re sleeping. It helps healthcare providers diagnose conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep disorders.
The test is usually performed at a polysomnography hospital, though some people take home tests. These are less accurate but still helpful in diagnosing a sleep disorder.
Polysomnography records the activities of multiple systems in your body while you’re asleep. This includes your brain waves, heart rate and breathing. It also tracks eye and leg movements, snoring, blood oxygen levels and body positioning during the night. A polysomnogram can help your doctor decide what treatments will be most effective for you. 수면다원검사 잘 하는 곳
The test itself is relatively painless, and most people experience only minor skin irritation caused by the adhesive that holds the sensors to your skin during the test. However, it’s important to avoid using any products containing alcohol or caffeine before taking the test.
These can affect your sleep patterns and may make the symptoms of some sleep disorders worse. It’s also a good idea to shower or bathe before taking the test and to remove any makeup, lotions or gels from your face and body. These can interfere with the sensors.
If you’re being treated for sleep apnea, your doctor may recommend that you try out a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine to see how well it improves your quality of sleep. You’ll likely have a separate study, called a CPAP titration, to determine the right CPAP settings.
During a CPAP titration, your health care provider will monitor you as you sleep with the CPAP device on to determine what pressure settings are most effective for your specific breathing pattern.
After the test, a technician will compile your data and send it to your doctor. He or she will then use it to make a diagnosis of your sleep disorder and prescribe treatment.
During the night of your polysomnography study, your body will shift between rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep cycles. REM sleep is the stage in which you dream, while non-REM sleep is a deeper type of rest. In a healthy person, these shifts are accompanied by normal brain activity and muscle movement. 연세로의료의원
People with sleep disorders, on the other hand, may not move as easily through these cycles and may have lower brain activity during REM and non-REM sleep. This can lead to a variety of different health problems. Your doctor will review your results and may suggest a follow-up visit to discuss them further.
The most common health issue diagnosed through polysomnography is obstructive sleep apnea. If you have this condition, it can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and diabetes. A CPAP machine can reduce or prevent the occurrence of these complications. It can also improve your overall health and wellbeing.
